New Balance once again came to the rescue by donating some of their shoes to members of the club. As you know our club strives to help where possible it is through drives like these that we try and make runing possible and easy for our members.
You can also donate some of your old running shoes that you are not making use of. We have seen some of our members doing the same. Please keep it.

I had chosen this charity as my preferred trust because of its real link with communities and providing sporting facilities to underprivileged areas. At first, I thought it was difficult to raise R 5 000.00 but through contacting various people, has made this experience very easy and fulfilling. Just after the two oceans marathon, I was thrilled to note that I was on the verge of reaching the target of R 5000 and I can confirm now that I reached my target. I hope and trust that next year; there will be lots of RCS GUGS runners who will take upon themselves for this wonderful and exciting challenge. I would like to thank each and every person that has donated and supported me in this exciting experience. Let us see each other in Durban on the 29 May 2011 at 5:30 AM, and for the challenging Pietermariztburg countdown. Yours , in running. Nyaniso

This year’s Soweto marathon lived up to its fame again. As usual our Gugs athletes came out in numbers. The weather was cool but the race was as always tough.
As I keep saying each time I go there that what steals the show for me in this race is huge number of female runners. I am not sure what we are doing wrong in the Western Cape “Godzillestad”. We need to do a survey is why our female counterparts are finding it dificult to take up running.

Since the Comrades entry opened to novices on Sunday 1 November at 9am, some thought it would long before they could reach the 5000 entries available guess what.

Imagine the shock some people got when they saw that the 5,000 mark was reached in less than 2 days – and as a result, no-one else will be able to register!

If you know of anyone that has entered but will not be able to run the race (for whatever reason) and will have to forfeit / give their entry to someone else, please let me know.

JERRY Mboweni, the last man to complete the Comrades Marathon before the cut-off time, was once a heroin addict.

Mboweni, who runs for the Gugulethu Athletics Club, said he wanted to give up many times along the route, but was motivated by the love of his Creator.

Still shaking after flying over the finish line, Mboweni, who completed his first Comrades, said it was difficult to explain how he got the strength to keep going.

“When I gave up heroin, I made a promise that I would do the Comrades. While running I kept thinking that I would not make it. Then I heard a voice. The Lord said that I must keep going,” the runner said.

This month will mark five years since Mboweni gave up heroin.

“It was not easy but I was determined to do it. Today I’m a proud man. I have had a tough life, but today I can celebrate this win,” he said.

Mboweni’s wife, Vanessa, was at the finish and burst into tears as he walked towards her. “My wife has played a big role in motivating me. I want to thank her too.” He said he’ll be back next year.
