New Balance once again came to the rescue by donating some of their shoes to members of the club. As you know our club strives to help where possible it is through drives like these that we try and make runing possible and easy for our members.

Thanking everyone It’s been a hard 6 months preparing for the comrades marathon and also raising funds for the SPORT TRUST charity in this year’s comrade’s marathon charity drive. I had chosen this charity as my preferred trust because of its real link with communities and providing sporting facilities to underprivileged areas. This year’s Soweto marathon lived up to its fame again. As usual our Gugs athletes came out in numbers. The weather was cool but the race was as always tough.
As I keep saying each time I go there that what steals the show for me in this race is huge number of female runners. I am not sure what we are doing wrong in the Western Cape “Godzillestad”. We need to do a survey is why our female counterparts are finding it dificult to take up running.

Heroism: Last runner tells of his struggle with heroin

JERRY Mboweni, the last man to complete the Comrades Marathon before the cut-off time, was once a heroin addict.
Mboweni, who runs for the Gugulethu Athletics Club, said he wanted to give up many times along the route, but was motivated by the love of his Creator.
Still shaking after flying over the finish line, Mboweni, who completed his first Comrades, said it was difficult to explain how he got the strength to keep going.
